Another News Report on Ethanol Issues

Recently, a semi-local news team did a story on ethanol. Unfortunately, the story repeated a lot of inaccurate information and half-truths. In the story, the report talked with several people about the issues with ethanol. One of the people she spoke with was a service technician. He showed a demonstration of burning ethanol blended gasoline. His claim of cool burning and residual matter left over really has nothing to do with the ethanol blended fuel. He also mentioned that ethanol, since it was made from corn, was gritty and therefore bad for the engine. If there was grit from corn in the fuel, many engines would have been destroyed and gasoline suppliers would have stopped using it many years ago. Plus, the process used to make ethanol is impossible to get grit.

There was also an older gentleman that the reporter spoke with about the issues with ethanol blended fuel. He said that he could drain gasoline out of his truck, let it sit overnight and there would be water on the bottom of the container. Several things are happening. The first is that his gas is probably saturated with water to the point of phase separation. Once the bucket was placed on the concrete floor, overnight, the temperature of the gas dropped. For those that did not know, the cooler the temperature, the sooner phase separation will occur.
